UTM Parameters Explained

What are UTM parameters and why do they matter?

UTM parameters are tags added to URLs that tell Google Analytics where your traffic came from. Without them, GA4 groups most paid and social traffic under 'direct' — making it impossible to know which campaigns actually drove conversions.

What's the right UTM naming convention for Indian D2C brands?

Use lowercase, hyphens instead of spaces, and be consistent. For Meta Ads: source=facebook, medium=paid-social. For Google Shopping: source=google, medium=cpc. For Diwali campaigns: campaign=diwali-2025-brand. Set this convention team-wide before campaigns launch — changing it mid-flight breaks attribution.

Do UTM parameters affect SEO?

Not directly — Google's crawler ignores UTM params. But set a canonical URL on landing pages to prevent duplicate content signals if the same URL gets indexed with different parameter combinations.

When should I use utm_content?

Use utm_content when A/B testing creatives within the same campaign — e.g., utm_content=carousel-v1 vs utm_content=video-v2. This shows you which ad format drove the conversion, not just which campaign.
